Four exemples of the great work of Sou Fujimoto
House O
« House O is a weekend house located on a rocky coast. The characteristic of its plan, imagined like the branches of a tree, is a continuous on room. »
Photos Daichi Ano

House N
« A home for two plus a dog. The house itself is comprised of three shells of progressive size nested inside one another. The outermost shell covers the entire premises, creating a covered, semi-indoor garden. Second shell encloses a limited space inside the covered outdoor space. Third shell creates a smaller interior space. Residents build their life inside this gradation of domain. »

Final wooden house
« I thought of making an ultimate wooden architecture. It was conceived by just mindlessly stacking 350mm square… There are no separations of floor, wall, and ceiling here. A place that one thought was a floor becomes a chair, a ceiling, a wall from various positions. The floor levels are relative and spatiality is perceived differently according to one’s position… This bungalow no longer fits the category of wooden architecture. If wooden architecture is merely something made from wood, then wood itself surpasses the architectural procedures to directly become a “place where people live” in this bungalow. It is of an existence akin to primitive conditions before architecture. Rather than just a new architecture, this is a new origin, a new existence. »

Tokyo Apartment
« Collective housing built in the residential section of the center of Tokyo. It consists of five dwelling units including owner’s dwelling unit. Each dwelling unit is made with two or three independent rooms of prototypical « house » shapes. And the two rooms exist, separated like combination of the room of the first floor, and the room of the third floor and they are connected by outside stairs. »
Will be completed in 2009

Dimitri Vangrunderbeek / Cupboard
« Dimitri Vangrunderbeek conceived a cupboard in collaboration with D&ALab. The starting idea comes from his moving figurines, cut out of paper, which are folded on the top to the piece of furniture’s feet (1991).
The nice pattern, based on twelve figurines taken from a Muybridge’s photographs sequence, gives us an animated image thanks to the figurines which are set out in various directions and which create a moving effect using their shaping and the variation of their shadow.
To produce this work, D&ALab provided the thin steel sheets and brought a special technique in order to cut down these little shapes from the thin steel sleeves. »

Perry Roberts / Day bed
« D&ALab produces Daybed and Stool from Perry Roberts which are both finished with long bands of wool of different colours. These bands of felt, fixed on one side, can be put into different orders the one over the other, so that you can arrange the view of the bench by yourself.
These benches were already part of Robert’s works. He does make no difference between art and design. His themes of choice and decision really fit in with the design of those benches. »

Designer Toshiyuki Tani has developed a very contemporary line of lights using traditional Japanese woodcraft techniques.
His Wappa series (Kazaguruma, Shuriken and Hanabi) of pendant and floor lamps employ bent cedar from Akita in northern Japan. And his newest light, the delicate Sen, is hand-built from hundreds of tiny strips of bamboo by traditional bamboo craftsmen in Shizuoka prefecture.
Describing his approach to lighting design, Tani talks as much about the shadow patterns cast by his fixtures as about the light itself. This shadow effect is particularly dramatic in the intricate pattern of very fine lines cast by the Sen.
Likewise, in low ambient light conditions the Wappa series presents an almost surreal contrast between the dark surfaces in front of the light source and the bright surfaces which catch the interior light.

« This is QLOCKTWO, the fourth dimension squared. A clock that tells time in words. It has a quadratic matrix of letters, where some of the letters are illuminated. The time is displayed as text in five minute intervals. If you need to have a more exact time, look in the corner at the illuminated dots. QLOCKTWOhas a brightness sensor; with its help the illuminating power of the letters is automatically adjusted. »
