Contemporary Embroidery

« To stitch; a thread or line that holds things together – this is the literal translation of the ancient Sanskrit word « sutra ». In the « Healing Sutras » I use contemporary embroidery on antique fabric as a canvas to explore the common threads that bind countless generations of women. Wounds – both physical and psychological – are given life using delicate, meditative stitches. Traditionally thought of as « woman’s work », sewing is a time consuming and contemplative process, each thoughtfully considered stitch becoming integral to the whole. »

Dead Drops

‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. American artist Aram Bartholl is ‘injecting’ USB flash drives into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody in public space. You are invited to go to these places (so far 5 in NYC) to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your files and date. Each dead drop contains a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is still in progress, to be continued in New York and in more cities.

Wire chair

Outlines were the theme of this collection by Nendo. Slight black lines like the traces of sketches drawn in the air made transparent surfaces and volumes appear, which we assigned practical functions. The outlines remained after simplifying paintings of plants and animals. They are condensed expressions of meaning, similar to Japanese calligraphy. The designs gently break the relationship of before and behind, and traverse at times the space between two and three dimensions. Multi-faceted and constantly morphing, they move alternately between the becoming and collapse of form.

The new collection by Nendo will be exhibited in London from 20th September at the Saatchi Gallery.
