« Jewels and ornaments in a rainbow spectrum, apparently fragile or difficult to wear, but in reality as supple and lightweight as feathers. The pins rest on shoulders like fanciful flowers just blossomed, the pendants caress necklines like shimmering drops of water, the swirls of vibrant filaments encircle necks like sparkling rings of pearly dew, rigid chokers shoot forth long and sinuous pistils like exotic tropical blooms blowing in a sea breeze. The entire body is willingly captured, dressed, and transformed by these organic sculpture-jewels that Gualti defines as extensions of the body. The universe of Gualti continues with the creation of his stoles : Silks, organza, taffetas, and anything else that can be wrapped around the body like a cocoon. »

Tine De Ruysser is a belgian jewellery designer. She creates jewells and accessories by folding metal and textiles. Her range of jewellery made from folded current banknotes is featured in this month Wallpaper
It reminds me of Katrine Borup work but Tine’s folding technique goes further.
« For this collection I considered money to be like gold…
The whole gold-money concept seems to be given some extra depth in the light of the current economic crisis. Banks have gone bankrupt because they were dealing in virtual money that had little to do with gold values backing it up, or even with the amount of paper money in circulation at the time. They are not to be trusted by savers or lenders. Why not go back to traditional values, and wear your wealth on your body so you don’t lose it? With exchange rates changing fast this is as much of a gamble as wearing gold or putting your money in the bank.
All banknotes are valid currency at the time the jewellery is made. The banknotes are only folded and not damaged in any way: no cutting is used, nor is any glue applied. Each note can be unfolded and used as currency. The jewellery is surprisingly strong; it does not tear easily or fall apart quickly. Some countries (like Australia) use polymers (plastics) rather than paper to make their bank notes; in that case the jewellery is even waterproof. »
